The Higher Education Minister is warning that needle spiking is beginning to "take hold" in Ireland.

There have been dozens of reports of women being spiked by injection in bars and nightclubs in the UK recently.

Minister Simon Harris said he'll be talking to the Minister for Justice about the worrying development in the coming days.

"From my point of you and the point of view of the Union of Students in Ireland, I know we're very eager to run a joint awareness campaign in the coming weeks".

It comes as Students at University College Cork staged a protest last night to raise awareness about needle spiking.

One student present said she has been spiked a number of times while working at late night venues as a sound engineer or photographer. She told our reporter she was scared that even choosing not to drink, she could still end up getting spiked.
