It's great news for Harry Potter fans. J.K. Rowling has confirmed the 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' franchise will consist of five films.

It was previously announced that three films would follow the Potter prequel, which takes place in 1920's New York.

The big news was revealed at the Fantastic Beasts Live global fan event last night in London, which was broadcast across the world.

"David Yates(Director) has told you that we do talk about Dumbledore and Grindelwald in [Fantastic Beasts], I'm not allowed to say too much. I am allowed to say one thing!", Rowling revealed.

"We were doing some script sessions the other day and I can tell you that we always knew it was going to be more than one movie. We knew that from the start".

"We said a trilogy as a kind of placeholder because we knew there would be more than one movie. I've now done the plotting properly and we're pretty sure it's going to be five movies!"

According to the director David Yates, future movies will explore the rise of Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwards in the Potter series, and his duel with Gellert Grindelwald.

The movie opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures.

Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a Muggle named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.

It also stars Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Dan Fogler, Colin Farrell, Jenn Murray, Jon Voight, Carmen Ejogo, Gemma Chan and newcomer Faith Wood-Blagrove.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is out in Irish cinemas on November 18th.
