Two teenage girls aged 16 and 17 have been killed, after a road crash in Co. Monaghan.

It happened while they were on their way to a school Debs.

It happened at Legnakelly on the N54 Clones to Smithborough road shortly before 7 o'clock yesterday evening.

Two other passengers are being treated at Cavan General Hospital - an 18-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy.

The driver of the car - a man in his 60s - is in critical condition in a hospital in Belfast.

Caothairleach of Monaghan County Council, David Maxwell, says the scale of the tragedy is hard to put into words.

"They were on their way to a Debs in Monaghan from Largy College, which is in the middle of Clones town, so you know the whole town of Clones and Co. Monaghan, is you know... you really can't put into words the tragedy that has hit the county".

The Debs was cancelled after news of the tragedy emerged, and the local youth club in Clones remained open until late last night to offer support to other students.

Gardaí are appealing to any witnesses to come forward.
