Mickey Harte dives straight back into management with Louth

Mickey Harte is the new Louth senior football manager.

The news comes just over a week after the 68-year old ended an 18-year spell in charge of Tyrone.

Harte's been handed a three-year term by the Louth County Board, and replaces Wayne Kierans who stepped down after their 1-9 to 1-7 defeat to Longford in the preliminary round of this year's Leinster Championship.

His remit doesn't end with the senior team.

Harte and his assistant - Gavin Devlin - will also oversee the Wee County's Under-20 footballers.

Harte was glowing in his appraisal of Devlin, with whom he's worked for the past eight years, when speaking to the Irish News earlier this month.

"Honestly, he’s like another son to me, the new Louth supremo said, "From the first day I seen him at a minor trial I thought there is something about this man. At the minor trial he was playing wing-back and he was directing operations, telling people where to go and playing the game himself.

"He was playing corner-back for us and during the time of the third midfielder, we’d say: ‘Don’t go out with him.’ He manned the ‘D’ and the opposition would kick the ball in where he was. He had the feet of a dancer. He would always come out with the ball. He was so measured.

"He seldom kicked the ball and hand-passed it to Brian McGuigan every time.

"He just has a passion and a football brain like nobody else."

They'll take over a Louth side who were consigned to life in Division 4 of the Allianz Football League, after they won just one of their Division 3 games this year.
