Twitter is changing the way tweets are displayed on its website.

At the moment, most people see a constant stream of updates, in reverse chronological order.

From today, a new algorithm will select top messages to appear first in users' timelines, as part of a feature called "show me the best tweets first".

It's a feature that Twitter says you can opt in or out of, depending on what you use the site for.

"You flip on the feature in your settings; then when you open Twitter after being away for a while, the Tweets you're most likely to care about will appear at the top of your timeline – still recent and in reverse chronological order."

"The rest of the Tweets will be displayed right underneath, also in reverse chronological order, as always. At any point, just pull-to-refresh to see all new Tweets at the top in the live, up-to-the-second experience you already know and love", a statement on the company's website reads.

To check it out, just go into the timeline section of your settings and choose 'Show me the best Tweets first'.

Twitter is promising to "be listening to your feedback and making it even better over time."

As with all Twitter updates, you may be waiting longer than some other users to see the new option appear in your settings.
