An Garda Síochána are clamping down on drug driving. From Thursday, April 13th, the Gardaí will be able to test for drugs at the roadside.

Gardaí will be using a special drug detection tool called the Drager DrugTest 5000. The device will be able to detect the presence of cocaine, opiates, benzodiazepines and cannabis in drivers.

This builds on previous efforts to tackle drug driving such as roadside impairment testing in 2014.

The Road Safety Authority says it's vital that people who are legitimately taking prescription medications are not alarmed by the new measures. Drivers with medical conditions should continue to take their prescribed medications in accordance with health care advice and medical fitness-to-drive guidelines.
