I went down to Form School to take part in one of their classes. Form School was set up by Gordon D'Arcy and his wife Aoife and offers Reformer Pilates and ballet barre classes.

So what is 'reformer pilates'? Most people will have tried pilates and know what the general idea is. Instead of working on a mat you work on a reformer bed, which is a frame with a movable padded carriage which glides up and down as you work out. You can adjust the springs to make it harder or easier, depending on your level of experience. You use straps, bars, shoulder pads and boxes to achieve different positions and movements.

I took the beginner class, with Emma instructing, which eased me in to it. Luckily they have different levels so they will cater for everyone. They start at Elementary (level 1), Middle School (level 2), High School (intermediate) and then you progress to Grad School (advanced).

The class I did, which was level 1, focused on specific techniques, learning to engage and strengthen core muscle groups. If you were to move on to level 2 the focus would be on core strength and flexibility, while intermediate and advanced are a much harder workout.

The room itself where the reformer beds are in Form School has a lovely setting. It has low lighting and really good air conditioning, which you need during the class. The reformer beds are lined on both sides of the room and there's plenty of room for you to do the exercises. Usually with mat pilates you find yourself tipping off the person beside you so it was nice to have space.

Some of the movements were challenging and you really feel the burn in your muscles, while others are more concentrated on stretching so are a little easier to do. I really enjoyed reformer pilates and would recommend it for anyone looking for an alternative to personal training or the gym.

They're located on Gratton St so it's very handy for anyone working or living in the city centre. They have classes right throughout the day and even have an express lunch class for half an hour. Prices start from €12.50 for the lunch class and €20 for drop-in hour long classes. Once you buy in bulk the price goes down.
