Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has had his contract terminated by Trabzonspor after protesting on social media about matches in Turkey still going ahead despite the coronavirus pandemic.

Europe's major leagues, including LaLiga, Serie A and The Premier League have postponed fixtures but the Turkish Super Lig are instead playing games behind closed doors.

"There is more to life than football," Mikel wrote on instagram last weekend.

"I do not feel comfortable and don't want to play football in this situation.

"Everyone should be home with their families and loved ones in this critical time. Season should be cancelled as the world is facing such turbulent times."

Mikel rexeived support from other players on his post, with former Chelsea teammate Didier Drogba saying "wise words" in the replies.

The former Nigeria international joined Trabzonspor on a two-year deal last summer but the 32-year-old has forfeited any remaining payments in order to leave early.
