A construction site in Dublin City Centre has been closed after workers tested positive for Covid-19.

One member of staff at the Townsend Street site was confirmed to have the virus initially, further testing found a number of other cases.

A spokesperson for John Paul Construction said the company is working alongside the HSE:

"Following confirmation that a staff member on one of our construction sites in Dublin had tested positive for Covid-19."

"Comprehensive testing has identified a number of additional positive cases."

"We have followed the specific advice of the HSE and the Health and Safety Authority at all times."

Also, the spokesman has confirmed the company is organising more tests "as required."

"We have temporarily closed the site as advised by the HSE."

Covid-19 Testing Needed For Locals - Donoghue

However a local Labour Councillor has raised concerns about other people who live and work in the area.

Kevin Donoghue wants tests offered to people in the wider community too:

"Well I suppose it stands to reason that people would be using shops and moving around the community."

"So what I would be concerned about, in relation to people living in the area, is that they'd be able to have access to testing as well."

"Just for example if you have caring responsibilities for somebody who would be at risk, if they were to catch Covid."

"There would probably be a lot of concern in that respect."

"That's what I was getting at in relation to locals gaining access to testing in the immediate term."

Adding that, as a local resident he sees builders and other people working in the City moving around for coffee or for lunch.

"I live in the area myself and you see people walking around and whatever else."

"I don't think there's anything really constructive about having a go at particular groups."

"Really the focus needs to be on the health of the people who are, or could be, affected by it."

"We need to try and do as much testing as possible so we know, especially where people might be asymptomatic, where there are cases within the community."
