Nicola Coughlan and Siobhán McSweeney to Reunite for West End Takeover
Derry Girls fans, brace yourselves—Nicola Coughlan and Siobhán McSweeney are reuniting, and this time it’s for a major West End moment.
The pair will star side by side in a brand new production of The Playboy of the Western World by John Millington Synge, with Normal People actor Éanna Hardwick also joining the cast.
Set to open at London’s National Theatre this December, the revival will be helmed by Abbey Theatre artistic director Caitríona McLaughlin and will run at the Lyttelton stage from 4th December 2025 to 28th February 2026.

Nicola took to Instagram to share the exciting news, posting: “Playboy of the Western World at the National Theatre. Reuniting with an old friend for a new adventure doing an Irish classic.” She added, “So excited to be bringing the Wesht of Ireland to the @nationaltheatre.”
It’ll mark Coughlan’s debut at the National Theatre, while McSweeney is no stranger to the stage, having previously appeared in As You Like It and Dancing At Lughnasa.
The story follows Pegeen Flaherty, whose life takes a turn when a mysterious stranger, Christy Mahon, wanders into her pub claiming to have killed his father. Rather than being cast out, Christy quickly becomes a local legend—until another twist sends the village into chaos.
Expect sharp wit, scandal, and a proper dose of Irish drama.
