The Irish actor Pat Laffan has died.

He's perhaps best known for playing Georgie Burgess in the 1993 Irish film The Snapper opposite Colm Meaney.

He also memorably played the character of Pat Mustard in an episode of Father Ted.

His career started at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1961, and spanned five decades.

The Abbey said in a tweet: "He will be sorely missed".

The Gate Theatre added: "Over the years, Pat was an incredible force in the Irish theatre community and was no stranger to the Gate throughout his prolific career as an actor and director."

Father Ted co-creator Graham Linehan said it was a "pleasure to work with" the actor.

Pat's other credits include films such as Intermission and The General.
