The Republic of Ireland are set to take on World Cup winners and the world's number one ranked team, the USA, in a friendly next month.

The match will be played in San Diego on Saturday, January 23rd and Sue Ronan's team follow that up with a game against the USA under-23s in a behind closed doors match in Carson, near LA on the following Monday.

It will be the second time the countries have met in less than a year after the hosts defeated the Girls in Green 3-0 in San Jose, ahead of what would turn out to be a successful World Cup tournament for them in Canada.

Following a disappointing 3-0 loss to Spain in the Euro 2017 qualifiers last month, Irish boss Ronan wants to get some good preparation done ahead of the April trips to Montonegro and Spain.

“We normally go to La Manga in January for a Winter Training Camp but couldn’t turn down this opportunity to test ourselves against the best.

"Having two matches in California will give me the opportunity to have a good look at all the players in the squad as well as some of those based in America because we have a lot of work to do before the EURO 2017 qualifiers resume in April."

Cork native Megan Connolly and Megan Campbell from Louth, who both play for NCAA College champions Florida State Seminoles, will get the chance to impress their international boss Stateside.

The game will also open the door for a return to the team for California-based Fiona O'Sullivan who has been unavailable for the first three qualifying matches.

Ireland's top striker took up a coaching role on the west coast earlier this year so she could be closer to her family for personal reasons.
