Joe Molloy spoke to Edwin McGreal today about the controversial walkout staged by ten members of the Mayo Senior Ladies football squad.

"Word started to break around the county yesterday of this issue, that approximately ten players had walked out on the Mayo senior panel, ahead of their game against Cavan this weekend. The timing of it is far from ideal for anyone," McGreal said.

"Effectively, these ten players communicated their intentions this day week to their manager Peter Leahy and they met with county board officers on Sunday last. The county board have not revealed what exactly was said. They generally don’t in these situations.

"But as the situation stands, Mayo are preparing a crucial game against Cavan in Clones on Saturday without 10 players including their captain, their vice captain and their star player respectively, Cora Staunton."

In a statement released by the Mayo players involved in this walkout, here is what they had to say:

"We stepped away from the Mayo panel for issues that are personal and sensitive to the players involved. Out of respect to the girls playing at the weekend and ourselves we will not be commenting further. We wish the Mayo team well in their game Saturday."

Considering this statement, Edwin gave us his own thoughts on the situation and what he thinks the real problem is.

"We do know that the issue here is between a group of players and management, rather than with the county board. It is important to stress that as far as this particular situation goes there are no issues in relation to the county board and there are also no issues to do with ancillary," he said.

"The Mayo setup is as good as what’s around in ladies football. The exact specifics we are still waiting on."
