WATCH: Arsenal see red again but salvage crucial point against Southampton

Arsenal continued their red card habit at home to Southampton, but Mikel Arteta's charges are still awaiting a first win since early November.

The sides played out a 1-1 draw at the Emirates, with defender Gabriel sent off for a pair of yellow cards.

It was an Arsenal old boy that had Southampton in front inside 16-minutes at the Emirates.

The hosts were carved open in midfield allowing Che Adams to slip a ball through to Theo Walcott. The former Gunner dinked the ball over the onrushing Bernd Leno to give the Saints an early advantage.

Despite looking frail in the centre of the park, Arsenal managed to keep the arrears at the bare minimum by half-time.

Seven minutes after the restart, they were level.

Bukayo Saka was allowed weave the ball forward through the inside-left channel. His pass to Eddie Nketiah was laid off for Aubameyang to make it 1-1.

It was the Gabon striker's first Premier League goal since Arsenal's 1-0 win over Manchester United at the start of November.

But two yellow cards in the space of four minutes for Gabriel likely put paid to Arsenal hopes of going on to take all three points.

The Brazilian defender picked up his second by holding Walcott after the Southampton forward spun and was heading goalward.

It's the third red card collected by the Gunners in their last five matches.

Nathan Redmond missed a gilt-edged chance to put Southampton back in front. He was falling as he made contact with a lofted Oriel Romeu pass. He managed enough contact to force the ball onto the Leno's right-hand upright and away from goal.

Redmond again tested the integrity of the Emirates furniture, with a curled effort hitting the side netting after he'd left former team-mate Cedric Soares for dead.

The draw may be enough to keep the wolves from Arteta's door, and in the process denied Southampton a brief spell at the summit of the Premier League.
