Welfare concerns have led to 10 players departing the Mayo Ladies senior football panel.

The walkout comes ahead of their All Ireland Senior Championship qualifier clash with Cavan on Saturday next.

Mayo News journalist Edwin McGreal joined Ger and Eoin on OTB AM to discuss the issues on Tuesday morning:

"Effectively in the last week 10 players have left the squad ahead of Mayo's Championship clash with Cavan this coming Saturday, the timing is clearly far from ideal here.

"The players informed the manager Peter Leahy of their intentions and subsequently informed the county board.

"The 10 players they include the team captain Sarah Tierney, the vice captain Fiona MacHale and the star of the team and Mayo's all time leading scorer Cora Staunton also gone is team selector Michael MacHale, he's Fiona's father.

"The reason from what we have ascertained is they are citing player welfare issues or concerns as the reason, we have no more specific details on that, we contacted the county board, we contacted Peter Leahy and we contacted players last night and there was no comments from players or the management.

"There was what I can describe as a holding statement fromt he county board confirming the players had left but saying there would be no further comment until after the Cavan game."

The Mayo County board confirmed the players departure but refused to be drawn on the reasons behind the unprecedented mass exodus, the county board say they will not comment until after the game against Cavan.

McGreal says the details are still sketchy but that the row centers over player welfare issues. He told Eoin and Ger that while this walkout wasn't expected, there were underlying tensions.

McGreal detailed Mayo's unhappiness with venue selection for the clash with Cavan and touched on other issues that were never resolved between the county board and the players.
