Manchester United have signed Tom Heaton on a two-year contract with the option of a further year.

The 35-year-old returns to Old Trafford having spent 13 years at the club as a youngster.

Heaton - who has three caps for England - was out of contract at Aston Villa and moves on a free transfer.

He also had permanent spells with Cardiff City, Bristol City and Burnley before moving to Aston Villa where he spent a large spell on the sidelines due to injury.

Heaton said: "For me to have the opportunity to come back after spending 13 great years here as a kid, it’s an incredible feeling and I’m really, really excited to get started.

"I’m just seeing it as a fantastic opportunity as I still feel I’ve got an awful lot to give and I’ve got the bit between my teeth.

"I’m looking forward to hitting the ground running. I feel in great shape and I’m looking forward to coming in to compete with the other goalkeepers."

United kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Leeds on August 14th and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to have a few more new faces in the squad by then.

Jadon Sancho is close to securing his move from Borussia Dortmund after both clubs agreed a fee of €85 million.

Meanwhile, United also announced that Juan Mata has agreed a one-year contract, keeping him at Old Trafford until June 2022.

The 33-year-old has scored 51 goals in 273 appearances for United since he joined from Chelsea in January 2014.
