"The Hardest Thing Is Picking The 26"- Jim Gavin On The Problems Of Squad Strength

Jim Gavin has some tough selection choices to make, ahead of the All-Ireland football final in two weeks.

Dublin beat Mayo in the All-Ireland semi final replay on Saturday, to reach their third decider in five years.

Their cause was helped on Saturday by the introduction of several key players off the bench, as Dublin raced clear in the last 15 minutes to win by 7 points.

Trailing by 4 points early in the second half, Gavin brought on Michael Darragh Macauley, Michael Fitzsimons, Alan Brogan and Kevin McManamon.

Macauley and Brogan combined to help set up Bernard Brogan for Dublin’s first goal, while McManamon struck 1-2 in his 16 minutes on the pitch.

Those performances have given Gavin an extra welcome headache, ahead of the decider with Kerry on September 20th.

One change may be enforced, as Cian O’Sullivan is a doubt with a hamstring problem, but Macauley and McManamon in particular will be pushing for starting berths over the coming fortnight.

And Gavin says reducing his match-day panel to 26 players is the toughest aspect of his job:
