Dubliner Stephanie Roche has lost out in her aim to become the first woman to win the FIFA Puskas Award in Zurich tonight.

The prize for the 2014 goal of the year was won by James Rodriguez (Colombia) whose strike against Uruguay (see below) at the World Cup in Brazil came top of the public vote.

Roche received an incredible 1.1 million votes or 33%, Rodriguez got 42% while the third nominee Robin van Persie received 11%.

Roche's wonder goal (see below) was scored in action for Peamount United against Wexford Youths in October 2013 and was assisted by fellow Irish international Aine O'Gorman.

The prize was established in 2009 by FIFA in order to award the player, male or female, judged to have scored the most aesthetically significant, or "most beautiful", goal of the year.

The Shankill native was the first woman ever to make the final 3 and was also up against Robin van Persie's World Cup header against Spain.

Cristiano Ronaldo picked up the big prize, the FIFA Ballon D'Or Award for the player of the year.

The Real Madrid star beat off competition from Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Manuel Neuer of Bayern Munich to win the prize for the second year running.
