Kevin Doherty has been appointed as the new Shelbourne manager.

The former Shels and Liverpool defender takes over from Johnny McDonnell, who is the new boss at Drogheda United.

He also had spells as a player at Waterford United, Longford Town and Bray Wanderers.

Doherty was McDonnell's assistant at Tolka Park for the past two seasons.

A Shelbourne statement said “We are delighted to now have Kevin on board as 1st  team Manager and to put his skills to the test in the difficult surroundings of the 1st division.”

“Kevin’s enthusiasm and love for Shelbourne Football Club shines through like a beacon and is infectious at all levels of the Club.”

Doherty will now get his backroom team and squad together for the 2015 season.
