Republic of Ireland boss Martin O'Neill has heaped praise on Shay Given after the Irish goalkeeping legend announced his decision to retire from international football.
Given had retired originally after Euro 2012 but made a sensational return to competitive action last year during the Euro 2016 qualifiers, several months after his initial recall by O'Neill in 2014.
After impressing the Irish gaffer in friendlies against Oman and the USA he started in the group D match at home to Poland.
The boss stuck with Given until he was injured in the famous win against Germany when Darren Randolph came on and retained the number one shirt for Euro 2016, apart from the pre-tournament friendlies.
O'Neill gave Given his last cap against Belarus at Turners Cross and this evening was effusive in his praise for his fellow Ulsterman.
"There is no question that Shay was one of the best goalkeepers ever to don an Ireland shirt. I had the privilege of working with him these last few years.
"He came out of international retirement, worked his way back into the national team and was doing brilliantly until suffering an unfortunate injury against Germany last October.
"Despite not playing in France at UEFA EURO 2016 he was still a very positive influence in the camp."
O'Neill had just left Aston Villa before Given arrived there from Manchester City in 2011 but he was very impressed by what he saw from afar.
"His club record speaks for itself. Those players who played in front of him all bear testimony to his brilliance. He is one of the best goalkeepers to have played in the Premier League since its inception."
FAI chief exec John Delaney sends the 40-year-old off with an open invitation to watch the Boys in Green!
"Shay has been a magnificent servant to Irish football and he has been a fixture in Ireland teams for two decades, experiencing some of the greatest moments for our national team.
"I would like to wish Shay the very best on his retirement and for the future as he continues on with his club. Shay will be welcome back to the Aviva Stadium any time."
