Shay Given Here To Fight For No.1 Spot

Shay Given wants to win back the Irish number one shirt that he once owned for sixteen years until his international retirement after Euro 2012.

The Aston Villa reserve goalkeeper went back on his decision, making himself available for the Boys in Green in 2013 and eventually made his international comeback in the friendly with Oman last September.

The 38-year-old has yet to oust the man in possession of the jersey, David Forde, for a competitive match but Given's performances with Villa in the FA Cup this season and Millwall's poor defensive record may give Forde reason for concern.

The Republic of Ireland are gearing up for Sunday's important Euro 2016 qualifier against Poland and had their first training session of the week today.

Martin O'Neill was tight-lipped when quizzed on the goalkeeping issue by 98FM Sport's Stephen Doyle who also spoke to Given after today's session in Malahide
