Shamrock Rovers winning start to the SSE Airtricity Premier Division was brought to a halt thanks to goals from Saints duo Billy Dennehy and Christy Fagan either side of half-time.

It was a match of poor quality with the home team edging the first-half overall.

Striker Gary Shaw shot one over as did Danny North from the edge of the box catching the ball bouncing up with a decent volley from a Brandon Miele header down.

Simon Madden forced a goal-line clearance from David Cawley with a cross-cum-shot in the 10th minute and three minutes later the only other shot on target Clarke had to save was from Shaw’s drilled effort from 20 yards.

Then Billy Dennehey scored his second in two games in the 45th minute and it was another header just like his goal against Bohs last Monday.

Graham Kelly hit a corner, a rare venture into the Rovers box for Pats, which Dennehey directed into goal a strong header.

7 minutes after the restart, in another rare attack, Fagan continued his fantastic start to the season with a front post headed goal from a Mark Timlin cross into the box.

Maxime Blanchard got a header on target from a Miele corner with 13 minutes left to play but it was straight at keeper Clarke.

Brandon Miele hit a couple of decent free kicks in the second-half, the best in the 88th minute from 25 yards that swereved towards the bottom corner but Clarke got down to save comfortably.
