The tension is cranking up at the quarter-final stage of the World Snooker Championships in Sheffield and five-time champ Ronnie O'Sullivan trails after his first session with Stuart Bingham.

The Essex native caused a little bit more controversy this afternoon but nothing too major as he fell 5-3 behind Bingham who played some excellent snooker in the closing stages.

In the fifth frame O'Sullivan placed his chalk on the the edge of the table which is a foul as it is deemed possible to aid a player in lining up a shot.

A seven point penalty should have been awarded but it was missed by both referee Terry Camilleri and Bingham, and O'Sullivan continued on to win the frame following an opening frame break of 118.

Bingham held his nerve and won the last three frames of the session to take a two frame lead ahead of the resumption of their last-eight tussle tomorrow afternoon at 14:30.

In a repeat of the 2011 semi-final Judd Trump dominated China's Ding Junhui and took a commanding 6-2 lead before their second session this evening at 19:00.

Anthony McGill showed that knocking out reigning champ Mark Selby was no fluke and battled hard against another ex-champ in Shaun Murphy to draw 4-4 in their first session ahead of their return tonight at 19:00.

There's another former Crucible winner struggling with Neil Robertson just finished up trailing Barry Hawkins 5-3.
