Ronan McCarthy steps down as Cork football manager

Cork are the latest county to be on the lookout for a new senior football manager.

Reports this luncthime suggest that Ronan McCarthy is set to depart the role after four years in charge.

The Irish Examiner reports that the Douglas man will be leaving the position, despite indicating a willingness to see out the remainder of his two-year deal.

It's understood this was not supported by Cork GAA officials.

McCarthy - who took over from Peadar Healy in late 2017 - had received a two-year extension last winter after his initial three-year expired.

Cork suffered a heavy defeat to Kerry in this year's Munster final, and required a relegation play-off to secure their Division Two status.

McCarthy did, however, lead The Rebels to promotion from Division Three, as well as a famous win over Kerry in last year's Munster Championship.

A late, late goal from Mark Keane handed the Leesiders a first win over their neighbours since 2012.

They subsequently went on to lose the provincial final to Tipperary.

Speaking after their loss to Kerry in July, McCarthy was coy on his future plans.

"In fairness to the lads I’ve come out. I didn’t have to. I come out, win or lose,” he told reporters.

“There are three parties to the conversation, the county board, the players and myself and I’m hardly going to talk about it now."

McCarthy's departure quickly follows that of Jack O'Connor from the Kildare hotseat.

The former Kerry boss has been heavily linked to a return to the Kingdom job.

There has yet to be any formal decision on whether Peter Keane will remain in situ beyond this season.

His three-year term in charge came to an end following their All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Tyrone on the weekend before last.
