Spanish prosecutors have accused Cristiano Ronaldo of defrauding the authorities of millions of euros in tax.

The Real Madrid star and Portuguese international who scored twice on Friday night in a 3-0 against Lativa in a World Cup qualifier is accused of evading tax of 14.7m euros from 2011 to 2014. The prosecutor's office in Madrid says it has filed a lawsuit against Ronaldo.

The world's highest-paid sports star had previously said he was not worried about tax investigations as he had nothing to hide.

On this occasion he is accused of knowingly using a "business structure" to hide income made from his image rights.

Ronaldo is the latest football star to be targeted by Spanish tax authorities. Lionel Messi was sentenced to a 21-month jail sentence and 2.09 million-euro fine last year for tax fraud.

Messi's Barcelona teammate Javier Mascherano also agreed a one-year suspended sentence for tax fraud

It is likely the prison term will be suspended as is common in Spain for first offences for non-violent crimes that carry a sentence of less than two years.

Ronaldo's representatives have so far not been available for comment.
