What now for Paris Saint Germain?

As Kevin Kilbane said last night, the tie against Real Madrid has shown just far away Paris Saint-Germain remain behind the European elite status they have spent heavily to get to.

After their 5-2 aggregate loss to Real - their second Champions League last-16 exit in successive years - has left a cloud of uncertainty over the club.

The future of manager Unai Emery is increasingly precarious, especially when you consider that PSG failed to win Ligue 1 last season as Monaco took the French title.

And although heavy spending has made PSG a powerhouse nationally, it will take much more planning to make them a true power in the Champions League.

French football writer Philippe Auclair joined us tonight to analyse what the Parisian club is likely to do next and what steps they need to take.

On the likely replacement for Emery, Auclair spoke about some of the names that have been mooted.

"Everyone knows that Unai Emery is going to go. Now the talk is starting about who is going to succeed Unai Emery at PSG. People are saying that Arsene Wenger has been contacted again by PSG. Can you believe it? Other people were talking about Mauricio Pochettino if Spurs get out at this stage of the competition no doubt PSG will think about somebody else because that's the way they work," he said.

But beyond personnel changes, Auclair sees a club that has plenty of soul-searching to do.

"The whole project - not just the players, not just the team, not just the manager - it's the whole project now being questioned in France and I think by many PSG supporters too," he said, also adding that the early and unprecedented exit from the Champions League is also a financial blow for the big-spending club and pointing out long-standing issues for the club in midfield and defence.
