Former Leinster head coach Matt O'Connor has a new job.

The Aussie has been appointed as the attack coach at the Queensland Reds on a three-year deal.

O’Connor departed Leinster in May after two seasons with the Blues.

In his first season, he guided Leinster to the Pro12 title, but they struggled last season, missing out on a semi final spot in the Pro 12 and getting knocked out of the Champions Cup at the semi final stage by Toulon.

He was also head coach at the Leicester Tigers for four seasons before his Leinster stint.

"It's exciting to join an organisation with such great rugby pedigree, history and tradition," O'Connor said in a statement.

"My family has been overseas for 13 of the last 17 years, so it's huge to be able to return to Australia and we're looking forward to making the move to Queensland to join the Reds."

O’Connor had been in line to take the head coach role at Queensland Reds, but that instead went to Richard Graham.

Queensland Reds general manager Dan Herbert expressed his delight at having O’Connor on board.

“The Reds rugby panel considered a number of local and international candidates to find someone who could help us deliver the best rugby program in Australia."

"Matt has a proven track record. He has a history of improving rugby programs with a strong attack-based approach to his coaching.

"We're looking forward to him making a significant contribution to Queensland rugby."
