Roy Keane is in the running to be the new Aston Villa manager.

Paul Lambert was sacked as Villa boss last night after 2 and-a-half years in charge.

He leaves the club in the relegation mire.

They are in danger of the drop, having not won in 10 league games.

Villa’s 2-0 loss to Hull City on Tuesday evening proved to be the final straw for owner Randy Lerner.

Keane has emerged as a possible candidate to replace the Scot.

The Irish assistant boss was Lambert's assistant at Villa earlier this season, before surprisingly leaving the role in November.

Following his departure, there were rumours of dressing room discontent with Keane’s coaching style.

His contract with the FAI runs until the end of the Boys in Green’s Euro 2016 campaign.

Tim Sherwood is also among the names being linked with the post.

Villa’s first team coach Scott Marshall and goalkeeping coach Andy Marshall will take charge of the side for Sunday's FA Cup fifth round tie with Leicester.
