As things stand, former Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has been installed as a favourite to succeed Arsene Wenger as manager.

But the scope of his role won't be quite as vast as Wenger's according to John Giles who joined us as always on a Thursday night to discuss the week's football and the weekend's action.

"He's not going to be the manager at Arsenal," stated John.

"He's going to be the coach. Arsenal have a system in place now which they did before Christmas, even in Wenger's time where there are three new individuals there. One is the director of recruitment and they've got names for the other two."

He added that those new directors were behind the most recent decisions around recruitment and contract renewals at Arsenal rather than Arsene Wenger.

"So if Arteta goes there, he's going to be given players to coach. He's not going to be the manager," said John.

Meanwhile, Sam Allardyce is out at Everton following fan discontent at the style of play despite comfortably keeping the team within the Premier League.

"I don't think people like him. I think he's arrogant. I think he's always blowing his own trumpet," he said.

"He said years ago if his name was Sam Allardici, 'I'd have one of the top jobs'. He was always envious of the foreign managers so I don't think he was liked by any of the clubs that he was at. That obviously has a big part to play when you want to get rid of the manager."
