Jason Day is the new US PGA Champion.

The Australian led the way heading into the final round at Whistling Straits yesterday.

And he carded a final round of 67 overnight, to finish up on 20 under par and claim his first major title.

Day says he struggled to keep his emotions in check:

Jordan Spieth was his closest challenger- but his final round of 68 wasn’t enough to put real pressure on Day. He ended three shots behind the Aussie on 17 under par.

But there was some good news for Spieth. The two-time major champion’s finish, coupled with Rory McIlroy’s 17th place finish on 9 under par, means Spieth now overtakes the Ulsterman as World Number One.

The 22-year-old American says being officially the best in the world isn't a bad way to make up for missing out on the title at Whistling Straits:

It caps a fine year for Spieth, where he won the Masters and the US Open, finished in a tie for fourth at The Open and ended second overnight at the US PGA.

McIlroy tweeted his congratulations to both Day and Spieth afterwards:
