Jamie Carragher has been suspended by Sky Sports after he spat on a 14-year-old girl.

The former Liverpool defender is fighting to save his job after shocking footage emerged last night. Sky have confirmed that he has been suspended for his actions.

Carragher was due to go on air tonight for the Premier League match between Stoke City and Manchester City.

Speaking to Sky News, the ex-Liverpool defender described his disgusting actions as "a moment of madness.

"The biggest regret was that a young girl who wasn't involved was caught up in the incident.

"I have brought shame on the name of football. I was a role model, people looked to me."

The former Liverpool defender had been covering his former side's 2-1 defeat by Manchester United in the Premier League for Sky Sports.

The video shows Carragher reacting to being teased about the result after a car pulls up alongside him in traffic.

He responded by spitting at the father and daughter from his car, who are driving alongside him.

Carragher says he was "goaded" but also admitted he was "totally out of order" and has apologised to the family.

He wrote on Twitter: "Totally out of order and I've apologised personally to all the family this evening.

"I was goaded 3/4 times along the motorway while being filmed and lost my rag. No excuse, apologies."

The video was first obtained by The Mirror, a spokesperson for Sky Sports told the paper: “It’s unacceptable behaviour and we will be addressing it with Jamie.”

Before being axed by Sky Sports Carragher was dropped from Champions League duty by Danish channel TV3 Sport, he had been due to cover the match between Manchester United and Sevilla.
