Manchester United legend Denis Irwin has hailed goalkeeper David De Gea as one of the world's best.

The Spanish international has turned in some eye-catching performances for the Red Devils in the Premier League this season and Irwin has been impressed.

"He's been the player this season, I don't think anybody would argue that fact. He's been outstanding, he was outstanding against West Ham at the weekend," said Irwin in an interview with 98FM Sport.

"He's probably the only one that's not been injured this year thank God. He's been a fantastic keeper, he's got better and better and certainly one of the best keepers in the world."

The player's agent Jorge Mendes revealed today that the club have opened contract talks with the Spaniard who has been repeatedly linked with Real Madrid and has just over a year remaining on his existing deal.

Irwin understands that the lack of Champions League football could be a factor when de Gea is mulling over a new deal but would love to see him achieve that at Old Trafford.

"All top keepers and all top players want to play in the Champions League but for his progression I think he's been fantastic at United. Hopefully he'll sign because he's played such a big part this year and I'm, sure he's got a huge part to play for whatever length (of time) he stays."
