Newly capped Republic of Ireland winger Callum O'Dowda has formally signed for English Championship side Bristol City, in a deal thought be worth over €1 million.
The club made the announcement on their website this afternoon, confirming that he has completed a medical and signed a three-year contract at Ashton Gate.
O'Dowda took the decision to leave League One side Oxford United, the club he supported as a boy, as he attempts to nail down a permanent place in Martin O'Neill's squad for the World Cup qualifiers.
The Irish boss called the 21-year-old up for the pre-Euro 2016 matches and gave him his debut in the friendly against Belarus at Turners Cross.
The flying winger impressed so much that O'Neill kept him with the final 23-man squad for the final few sessions in Cork before they departed for France.
O'Dowda told Bristol City Player HD that he hopes to help his new club achieve their ambition of making it to the Premier League.
“I want to be playing in the Championship and to help the team to achieve promotion; that’s certainly the ambition set out from the gaffer and the chairman.
“Winning promotion with Oxford was just a dream come true really. I was there since the age of eight.
“It’s been fantastic playing for the club. The fans, the players; everything about the club is great and I can’t thank them enough.
“I’ve also got called up for Republic of Ireland after initially being placed into a preliminary squad. Now this move to Bristol City tops it off.”
His new boss at Bristol City, Lee Johnson, told the club website why he was eager to sign the Irish international.
“He’s a real emerging talent. He’s very mobile, comfortable on the ball and hungry to improve. He’s got a great personality, which is conducive to having a very good career.
