Ireland did all they could to try and bag third place in the Six Nations table with an impressive win against the Scots but will have to see how France do against England.

The visitors did give Ireland a rattle when Stuart Hogg broke through from his own half to run in the first try of the game midway through the first-half.

Greg Laidlaw’s conversion edged Scotland in front after they’d conceded three penalty kicks to Johnny Sexton.

The lead only lasted 8 minutes as CJ Stander ended a Ireland’s sustained camp out on the Scottish line with a try.

Sexton converted and the provided the super kick that led to an calamitous collision between Hogg and his winger Tommy Seymour.

Keith Earls grabbed the ball and ran in the try to celebrate his 50th cap and to help the team to a comfortable 21-13 half-time lead which was extended 7 minutes after the restart.

Conor Murray made the dive over with a super poacher’s try at the back of the ruck and a Sexton conversion came straight after.

Scotland lock Richie Gray took advantage of poor Irish defending to sneak in in the 55th minute and Laidlaw converted.

Gray wasn’t the only lock to get over as Devin Toner did just that in the 68th minute, his first international try, and Sexton’s conversion sealed the win.

It all got a bit narky then and there were a few flash points and Sexton eventually went to the sinbin after Alex Dunbar had done earlier but the latter got a late try which was mere consolation.
