At the start of this season, the situation at Bayern Munich was very uncertain and ultimately a few poor results saw Carlo Ancelotti sacked.

So the Bavarian giants turned to a familiar figure in the shape of Jupp Heynckes, the manager who had led them to Champions League glory in 2013 as part of a historic treble.

Since returning, Bayern have raced away from their rivals domestically and are virtually assured of their place in the Champions League quarter finals after thrashing Turkish champions Besiktas 5-0 in their last-16 first leg on Tuesday night.

So what's been the secret to Heynckes renewed success with a club often dubbed FC Hollywood for the ego-driven issues that have arisen over the decades?

"He's just re-created harmony in the dressing room," said German football writer Rafa Honigstein who joined Joe and Kevin on the Football Show.

"It's not the easiest dressing room. You've got big egos. You've got players who are the wrong side of 30 who still want to play but have to be phased out slowly and gently in Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben.

"You've got too many players in midfield and all vying for a couple of places and it's a bit of a shark tank. Ancelotti's relaxed, hands-off way of handling it basically blew up in the club's faces back in October and since Heynckes has come in with his very gentle and fatherly way of massing egos and rotating and being nice to everyone, has managed to eke out good results."

But as he added, that fatherly kindness is also mixed with a emphasis on discipline and guidelines which has been welcomed by the playing staff.

But can Bayern keep the veteran manager beyond this season? You can listen to the full chat on the Football Show podcast.
