Dublin are building something special.

That’s according to former Dublin hurling manager Humphrey Kelleher, who joined Derek Ryan on Now that’s what I Call Sport this morning.

He was speaking after Dublin’s narrow one point defeat to All Ireland Champions Galway yesterday at Pearse Stadium in Salthill.

That defeat was Dublin’s third in their last four games.

But former Dublin boss Humphrey Kelleher had great praise for the current Dublin boss and his backroom staff.

“I think that Pat Gilroy, Anthony Cunningham and Mickey Whelan have done tremendous work getting the team together.

"But now I think Pat has built up a panel of players similar to what he’s done in the football and he’s now instilled in them that they can compete with the best", added Kelleher.

"The reason I think that is because they are fitter, fighting for the ball and they are working more."

When asked about Gilroy’s first year in charge as Dublin hurling manager as a whole, Kelleher was very positive.

“I think it was a very good year overall and as time went on Pat has brought people in that made great improvements.

"Managing is about managing the people to become the best they can be and that is what Pat Gilroy is currently doing. If i had to mark Pats first season out of ten, I'd mark him a six or seven”

You can listen to the full Now That’s What I Call Sport below, where we were also joined by Shane Byrne on Ireland’s defeat to Australia and Colin Bell on the Ireland’s women’s 2-0 defeat to Norway during the week:
