La Liga TV has announced that Gary Lineker is set to front some of its coverage for the upcoming season.

The former striker - who played for Barcelona for three years in the late 1980s - is said to have signed a 'multi-year agreement'.

He will present 'key fixtures' and also have an input into their studio programme, broadcast from Barcelona.

One of the best-known faces in broadcasting, Lineker has hosted Match of the Day since 1999 - a role he is set to continue in.

He was also the anchor for BT Sport's Champions League coverage but rejected an offer to extend his six-year stint earlier this year.

At the time, Lineker said he wished to explore other opportunities - including following 'Leicester across Europe with my sons'.

“I’m thrilled to become a part of LaLigaTV, a channel I’ve watched every weekend for the last two seasons,” Lineker said.

“I have fond memories of my time playing in Spain and very much look forward to sharing the excitement of LaLiga with viewers in the UK and elsewhere.”

La Liga TV was launched in the UK and Ireland in January 2020 as part of a partnership with Premier Sports.

The initial deal with Premier Sports was due to last until the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

The season kicks off on Friday, August 13th.

Gaizka Mendieta, who scored the infamous penalty to knock Ireland out of the 2002 World Cup, is also part of their talent pool.
