Tom Ryan has been announced as the new Director General of the GAA.

The Carlow native takes over from Páraic Duffy, who served in the role for the last 10 years.

Ryan moves into the role having worked as the association's Director of Finance since 2007, and is currently Treasurer of Faughs GAA Club in Templeogue in Dublin.

In a statement released this morning, Ryan said: "I am humbled and excited to be assuming this position and I am greatly looking forward to serving the Association and its members to the very best of my ability in the years ahead".

The 48-year-old will be the 19th Director General of the GAA, and has been given a seven year term in the office, starting from next month.

GAA President John Horan has welcomed the appointment, adding that Ryan's GAA background will be vital for the role.

"I am pleased to announce that Tom Ryan has been appointed as the new Ard Stiúrthóir of Cumann Lúthchleas Gael.

"He has served the GAA well in his previous position and has the requisite vision to lead the Association in the years ahead.

"He understands the GAA at every level and is highly active at club level providing him with important insights into the challenges we face as an organisation.

"I look forward to working with him and wish him well in the role."

Former president Liam O'Neill, and former Tipperary hurling manager Liam Sheedy were also thought to be in consideration for the role.
