Portuguese legend Eusebio passed away in the early hours of this morning aged 71.

Nicknamed the Black Panther, Eusebio was named European Footballer of the Year in 1965, and scored an incredible 733 goals in 745 professional games.

He also made his mark on the world stage, as he helped Portugal finish third at the 1966 World Cup claiming the golden boot along the way, after bagging nine goals throughout the tournament.  

He won the European Cup with Benfica in 1962 and was in the side that lost to Manchester United in the 1968 Wembley final.

Current Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo was among those to pay tribute.

"Always eternal, Eusebio, rest in peace," the Real Madrid and former Manchester United striker said on Twitter.
