Dundalk have added American midfielder Taner Dogan to their squad for the 2021 season.

The 22-year old spent the second part of last season at SSE Airtricity First Division side Athlone Town. Before that, he'd trained with Dundalk and even played in a number of friendlies for the Lilywhites.

While with Athlone, Dogan scored a superb goal from just inside the opposition half in 2-0 win away to Drogheda United.

That was one of four goals Dogan scored during 18 appearances for Athlone last season.

Having recently received a work permit, the Missouri native told DundalkFC.com, "I am delighted to sign with Dundalk and help the club build upon the success it has enjoyed in recent years.

"I was able to gain valuable League of Ireland experience last year with Athlone Town and I’m excited to continue my development with the excellent coaching staff here."

Making way for Dogan is Will Patching.

Having been signed by former head coach Vinny Perth ahead of the 2020 season, the former Manchester City midfielder has  failed to make much of an impact at Oriel Park.

Patching has joined Derry City on an initial six-month loan deal.

We’ve been looking to add creativity to our midfield over the winter and Will brings that in spades," said Devine.

“He is a young lad with so much to offer and I’m delighted to bring him to Derry City," said Candystripes boss Declan Devine.

"Will is here on loan from Dundalk until July with the option to become a permanent signing after that.

"His game time was limited last year because of competition for places. I want him to get back to enjoying his football and to being the dynamic player that he is and from what I’ve seen so far he will be a fantastic asset for this club.”

Dundalk's season begins with the President's Cup against Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium on March 12. Pat Hoban recently added spice to that contest, claiming Rovers' title win was without merit.

Their SSE Airtricity Premier Division season begins a week later away to Sligo Rovers.

Before then, Dundalk have pre-season games with Bohemians (February 26) and Drogheda United for the Jim Malone Cup on March 6.
