Togging out for the Dublin hurlers still seems to be a tough sell for some players as a number of All Ireland club SHC winners have failed to join the panel.

Midfielder Darragh O'Connell has told management that he will not play a part in the Leinster championship as he wants to take a break from the game.

Colm Cronin has also opted out of the panel as he is travelling to Africa as part of his medical studies, he joins Oisín Gough and Paul Schutte on the missing list.

Cuala do provide a number of players to Pat Gilroy including Sean Moran, Cian O'Callaghan, Jake Malone and David Treacy.

Liam Rushe is also back in action while Chris Crummey has recovered from an ankle injury suffered in the Allianz League quarter-final loss to Tipperary.

Coach Anthony Cunningham understands why O’Connell and some of the Cuala contingent feel the need for an extended break:

“Darragh said that he wanted to take some time off. He's been on the road for the last two years and what Cuala have done has been historic and brilliant.

“He's a really talented hurler, a great athlete and we would love to have had him but he wants to take a break and we respect that.

“Colm Cronin was due to go to work in Africa last year as part of his medical studies and he had put that off last year so now he has to go and do that now."

Dublin begin their Leinster Senior Hurling Championship campaign with an opener against Kilkenny on May 13th.
