The story of Michael Conlan's controversial Olympic Men's Bantamweight quarter-final could yet take another very cruel twist for the Irish boxer.
There was uproar when his Russian opponent Vladimir Nikitin was awarded the win by unanimous decision.
That's despite the Irish and international media and boxing community believing that they had watched a bout which clearly looked Conlan had won.
It has emerged tonight that the Russian fighter is in danger of missing his semi-final bout with opponent Shakur Stevenson.
American writer Sarah Demning tweeted that Nikitin was being sent home due to the cuts that he received in his last-16 match-up which were reopened by Conlan.
Here's a scoop. US Head coach Billy Walsh says Shakur Stevenson advances on W/o tomorrow. Nikitin's face a mess after Conlan @StiffJab

That news was countered though by Associated Press writer Greg Beacham who reports that Nikitin will decide in the morning at the fight weigh-in
AIBA says Vladimir Nikitin has NOT told them he'll withdraw from his bout with Shakur Stevenson. The AM weigh-in is when he has to decide.

Doesn't mean Vladimir Nikitin can fight or plans to fight. Just means AIBA hasn't been told he won't fight & hasn't ruled him out medically.

If the Russian pugilist was forced to pull out through injury, it would mean that his American opponent would get a walkover into the final where he would be guaranteed at least a silver medal.
As tough as Conlan is, that prospect is a very painful for one for the Irishman to take.
