Cherrie pushing to be first choice following surprise Dundalk return

Dundalk have signed experienced goalkeeper Peter Cherrie.

The 37-year old returns to a club for whom he made over 200 appearances before departing for Cliftonville following the 2014 season.

That year saw him help the Lilywhites win both the Premier Division title, and the EA Sports Cup.

Following that brief spell in Belfast, Cherrie has played for Bray Wanderers, Cork City and spent the last two seasons at Derry City.

Cherrie was an ever-present for the Candystripes last season, and says the return to Oriel Park has taken him by surprise.

"It’s absolutely brilliant to be back,” he told dundalkfc.com. “If you had said this to me a month ago I’d have said there was no chance it would ever happen but when I got the call I was delighted.”

The Scot will provide competition for recent signing Alessio Abibi, following the retirement of long-term first choice Gary Rogers at the end of last season.

"It’s never been in my nature to come and sit on the bench,” said Cherrie. “It’s just not in me. If that day comes, then I may as well retire.

“I’m here to push every single day and work every single day and I’ve told the coaching staff that. I might only have a couple of years left so I’ll be treating every day like it’s my last.”
