The away leg of Chelsea's Champions League last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid will be played in Bucharest.

UEFA has confirmed the first leg on February 23rd has been switched from Spain to Romania because of coronavirus restrictions.

Spanish government Covid restrictions on travel from the UK would not allow Chelsea to fly to Madrid.

A short statement from Chelsea read: "UEFA has confirmed that Chelsea’s Champions League Round of 16 first leg match away against Atletico Madrid and will now be played at the Arena Nationala in Bucharest in Romania.

"The date of the match, Tuesday 23 February, and the kick-off (8pm UK time) will remain the same.

"The second leg at Stamford Bridge is on Wednesday 17 March at 8pm."

Today's news means that the three remaining Premier League clubs in the Champions League will all play their away legs at neutral venues.

Liverpool and Manchester City will travel to Budapest for their respective ties against RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Manchester United and Arsenal's Europa League last 32 ties have also been affected by coronavirus restrictions.

The first leg of United’s game against Real Sociedad has been moved to Turin while Arsenal will play the first leg of their tie with Benfica in Rome.
