Former two-weight world champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez will serve just a six-month ban after failing two drugs tests in February.

The Mexican's team reached an adjudication with the Nevada State Athletic Commission before a hearing today where it was adopted unanimously by the commission.

Canelo, who tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol, was slapped with a one-year ban but will have six months suspended because Canelo cooperated, as per commission rules.

The remaining six have been backdated to the date of the first positive test meaning that he can return to the ring from August 17.

The current WBA, WBC and IBF middleweight world champ Gennady Golovkin was due to fight Canelo on May 5 but now instead will face Vanes Martirosyan on 5 May at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Golovkin hopes to fight his original opponent on Mexican Independance weekend in September.
