Burnley have become the first Premier League club to go public with the identity of someone testing positive for COVID-19.

They say assistant manager Ian Woan tested positive having been swabbed on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, the Premier League revealed that six people of the 748 players and staff tested on Sunday and Monday had returned positive results.

The Premier League had said that the identities of the individuals, and the three clubs in question, would remain private.

Burnley say Woan is asymptomatic, but the former Nottingham Forest winger will self-isolate for the required seven days.

0.8% in the first wave of Premier League tests have come back positive, compared with 0.58% in the German Bundesliga (10 in 1,724).

Players began returning to their clubs on Tuesday, with training permitted under phase 1 of Project Restart in groups of five.

No contact is permitted, and strict medical protocols must be observed at all times.

Club statement:

Burnley Football Club can confirm that after completing a Covid-19 test on Sunday, 17th May, assistant manager Ian Woan has tested positive.

The Burnley first team squad and playing staff were all tested last weekend, ahead of a return to training.

In line with strict Premier League requirements and following a positive test, Ian will now self-isolate for a period of seven days, with a view to being tested again week commencing Monday, 25th May.

Ian is asymptomatic and is currently safe and well at home.

He will remain in close communication with club personnel regarding his re-engagement in training once he is clear of the virus.

Everyone at Burnley Football Club sends their best wishes to Ian and his family.

Burnley Football Club will continue to follow the first stage of the return to training protocol, while adhering to Premier League guidance in terms of testing all players and backroom staff twice per week.
