Bartomeu drops Super League bombshell as he quits Barcelona

Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu and the club's entire board have resigned.

It follows a poor start to the season and a public spat with star player Lionel Messi in the summer when the forward threatened to leave.

The club’s members were planning to bring forward a motion this coming Sunday to remove Bartomeu from his post.

On his way out the door, Bartomeu dropped a bombshell regarding a proposed European Super League.

During a press conference, he said, "The Board of Directors has approved the acceptance of the requirements to participate in a future European Super League of Football Clubs, a project promoted by the big clubs in Europe."

Talk of a European Premier League has intensified in recent weeks.

Last week, Barca were among the clubs named in a proposal which would be backed by the JP Morgan bank.

A league of 18-20 teams has been mooted, with sides playing each other on a home and away basis prior to a playoffs system to decide the winner.

The European Premier League would not be a breakaway entity from the participating clubs' home leagues, rather an accent to them.

La Liga president Javier Tebas reacted immediately to Bartomeu's statement, tweeting, "Unfortunate Bartomeu announcing on his last day participation in phantom competition, which would ruin FC Barcelona, and confirming his ignorance of football industry.

"Sad finale for a president who did some things right, but ended up making mistakes."

Bartomeu's position had become untenable after Lionel Messi's botched attempt to leave the club in the summer.

The club's star player was open in his disdain for the president.
