Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has signed Republic of Ireland under-19 international Barry Cotter from Limerick for an undisclosed fee.

The 19-year-old has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the English Championship club where he joins Aaron Drinan who signed from Waterford this month.

Cotter can play at right-back, in central defence or in midfield and joins after a spell training with the Tractor Boys this month.

"I know Aaron from growing up and playing at U19 level and I know some of the other boys here as well which will help me settle in," Cotter told iFollow Ipswich.

"It’s a big step up for me but I’m confident it’s one I can make. I’ve not set myself too many goals yet. I’d like to break into the first-team obviously but for now, I just want to get my head down and work hard and show people what I can do.

"With the manager and coaching staff here I feel I can really improve as a player and that’s my main aim for now."
