American teenager Amanda Anisimova has dumped defending women's champion Simona Halep out of the French Open.

The unseeded 17-year-old dispatched her Romanian opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, at Roland Garros to become the first player born in the 2000s to reach a Grand Slam semi-final.

“I’ve been working very hard but I never thought it would pay off like this,” Anisimova said of the victory.

“This is more than I could ask for. This is one of the best matches I’ve ever played.”

Halep's defeat also ensures there will be a first time Slam winner crowned after Saturday's final.

Anisimova will face Ashleigh Barty in the semi-finals tomorrow after Barty's 6-3, 7-5 victory over Madison Keys.

Eighth seed Barty is already looking forward to tomorrow's match.

“She’s been playing some amazing tennis, an amazing match today, it’s an exciting match for both of us.”

Tomorrow's other last-four clash pits Czech 19-year-old Marketa Vondrousova against Britain's Johanna Konta.
