Sergio Aguero "getting better" ahead of Man City clash with Liverpool

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola hasn't ruled out the possibility that Sergio Aguero could face champions Liverpool in the Premier League this weekend.

Having only recovered from a knee injury, the Argentine striker injured his hamstring in the draw with West Ham United and missed last Saturday's win at Sheffield United and the Champions League trip to Marseille last week.

Aguero will miss tomorrow's European group tie at home against Olympiacos but it is possible that he could be ready for the visit of the league leaders on Sunday.

"Right now, I don't know but it is getting better," said Guardiola.

"We don’t want to make a step back again, but he’s getting better. What he felt was not so dangerous. He’s getting better – I don’t know about Liverpool but after the international break for sure he’ll be ready."

In a further boost to Guardiola's badly depleted forward options, Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus has returned to training after recovering from a thigh injury.

He has been sidelined since picking the injury up in the opening Premier League match of the season against Wolves but Guardiola did not confirm whether he will be fit enough to face the Greek champions at the Etihad Stadium.

"It's too early to know. He did one training session with the team. We're happy he is back," said the City boss.

While the league season is only in the early stages, and City have a game in hand, they are five points behind the Merseysiders ahead of Sunday's clash.

However, Guardiola bristled at the suggestion that he might rest some key players for the Olympiacos game.

"Absolutely not. In the Champions League, you cannot make a false step because after that we'd struggle," said Guardiola.

"We know in the Champions League you have to secure your games at home and win at least one away.

"We did that in Marseille but now we have to be sure we can keep the points at home.

"Tomorrow we have an incredible opportunity to take a huge step toward qualifying for the next round.

"This competition is not like a decade ago when I started as a manager and qualifying was easier than right now.

"It's difficult, every game. People don't believe it. It's a tricky competition, that's why I'm delighted with what we have done so far in the Champions League.

"We cannot miss this chance to get nine points and be in a position for one more step to be in the 16 better teams in Europe."
